Colombo’s new traffic surveillance programme to use CCTV footage

A programme designed to detect traffic rule violations using Colombo city’s CCTV system will be initiated, from January 22 Acting IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon.

Under this initiative, video evidence of relevant traffic offenses recorded by the traffic division’s CCTV system will be transmitted to the respective police stations, and drivers found in violation will be issued fines accordingly.

Acting IGP Tennakoon highlighted the significant advantage of this technology in identifying violations, stating that while traffic police officers might detect a limited number of infractions during their road duties, the CCTV analysis has unveiled a remarkable surge of over 300% in offenses at specific locations when compared to manual observations.
