News Today: Public Security Minister Outlines Key Steps to Combat Crime and Drugs Trafficking

Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananda Wijepala outlined new measures to combat organized crime and drug trafficking in Sri Lanka. Speaking after assuming office, the Minister emphasized strengthening police manpower, depoliticizing recruitment, and ensuring merit-based promotions within the force.

The Minister announced a review of police recruitment issues, with plans to accelerate hiring and reinforce police capabilities. Additional officers from the Presidential and Ministerial Security Divisions will also be redeployed to bolster the workforce. The National People’s Power (NPP) government, led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, aims to depoliticize law enforcement and promote justice and fairness across society.

The Public Security Ministry will prioritize creating a law-abiding and disciplined police force, which is essential for establishing a fair society. Special attention will be given to resolving issues faced by lower-ranked officers and addressing public concerns about police interactions.

Minister Wijepala also highlighted the NPP government’s manifesto pledge to eradicate corruption, fraud, and financial crimes. The police force is expected to align with these objectives and the people’s mandate.

Justice and National Integration Minister Harshana Nanayakkara, Public Security Ministry Secretary Ravi Seneviratne, Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasooriya, and senior officials attended the event. Minister Wijepala reaffirmed his commitment to transforming the Public Security Ministry into a people-friendly and justice-oriented institution that prioritizes safety and welfare for all.
