The Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) kicked off both the first trading session of June (stock market) and a fresh week on a bullish trajectory, instilling confidence in investors and financial analysts. The All Share Price Index (ASPI) gained 125.03 points (0.74%) to close at 16,979.89, while the S&P SL20 Index climbed 53.35 points (1.07%) to settle at 5,034.92.

Total market turnover was a robust LKR 5.86 billion, with 363.39 million shares traded across the board. Despite the bullish tone, market breadth showed mixed sentiment, with 106 stocks gaining and 119 declining, reflecting investor selectivity.

Sampath Bank (SAMP.N) was the day’s top performer, contributing 18.47 points to the ASPI, while Ceylinco Holdings (CINS.N) acted as the biggest drag on the index, pulling it down by 11.65 points. The Capital Goods sector led the day’s activity, accounting for LKR 1.753 billion, or nearly 30% of total turnover—a signal of ongoing investor interest in infrastructure and industrial plays.

Crossing transactions added significant volume and value to the session, contributing LKR 0.760 billion, approximately 13% of the total turnover. The standout crossing involved Alpha Fire Services Limited PLC (AFS.N), which recorded LKR 212.76 million in turnover, with 21.27 million shares changing hands.

As the month begins with positive sentiment, market analysts are keeping a close watch on both domestic policy cues and global economic indicators. For Sri Lankan equity investors, this promising start may signal a more stable and profitable quarter ahead.
