Sri Lanka Defence denies allegations of selling ammunition to Ukraine through Poland.

Sri Lanka denies ammunition sale to Ukraine. The Defence Ministry has categorically denied allegations of selling surplus ammunition to Ukraine through Poland. This denial comes in response to a report by the Russia Today Telegram Channel, which claimed that Poland was working with intermediaries to acquire expired ammunition from Sri Lanka for shipment to Ukraine. The report suggested that the ammunition would have its markings erased and repainted before being transported to Poland and eventually to the Ukrainian battlefield.

The RT report stated that the ammunition in question are reportedly ‘expired’ and would have their markings erased and repainted before being transported to Poland and eventually to the Ukrainian battlefield.

However Sri Lanka’s Defence Ministry has denied these allegations.

Colonel Nalin Herath, the Defence Ministry Spokesman, dismissed the claims as false, stating that there is no validity in the reports.

On the other hand, he acknowledged the presence of ammunition which has passed its shelf life being stored in military-owned warehouses in the country.

Colonel Herath clarified that “these stocks do not belong to the Ministry of Defence but to a Foreign Private Company, which has been instructed to promptly remove or destroy the surplus ammunition due to security concerns.

“The Ministry of Defence has directed this particular company to take immediate action to eliminate the stock from Sri Lanka, deeming it unnecessary to retain them in the warehouses any longer,” he said.

Meanwhile, sources have accused a Chinese Company of trying to sell this surplus ammunition stock to Poland through a Sri Lankan firm, Cosmic Technologies Private Limited last year. The sale was thwarted due to international pressure, leading to the abandonment of the plan at that time.

They said the deal reportedly involves a Polish company named “Level 11 SP. Z O.O” and a Lankan firm, “Cosmic Technologies Private Limited.”
