Ex-Test Cricketer Dulip Samaraweera Banned by Cricket Australia

News Today: Former Sri Lankan Test batsman Dulip Samaraweera banned by Cricket Australia for misconduct.

Former Sri Lankan Test cricketer Dulip Samaraweera has been banned from holding cricket roles in Australia for 20 years, following inappropriate behavior with a female player. Cricket Victoria (CV) confirmed the ban yesterday, stating that Samaraweera breached Cricket Australia’s (CA) code of conduct.

Samaraweera, 52, who represented Sri Lanka in seven Tests and five ODIs between 1993 and 1995, coached women’s cricket teams in Australia, including the Melbourne Stars in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).

Cricket Australia’s Conduct Commission found his conduct violated the organization’s standards, resulting in the lengthy ban. CV backed the decision, with CV CEO Nick Cummins calling the behavior “utterly reprehensible and a betrayal of everything we stand for at Cricket Victoria.”

Cummins also praised the courage of the victim, emphasizing that CV will continue to offer support to help her achieve her goals both on and off the field.

The ban effectively prohibits Samaraweera from holding any position within Cricket Australia, or any state or territory associations for the next 20 years. Samaraweera could not be reached for comment following the announcement by Legacy Daily.

This decision marks a significant stand by Cricket Australia in ensuring that misconduct is met with appropriate consequences, especially in sports environments that should prioritize respect and safety for all players.
