News Today: Freedom People’s Congress Accuses Former Regime of Rs.720 Million Misuse
Former MP Dullas Alahapperuma has accused the previous regime under former President Ranil Wickremesinghe of misusing Rs.720 million in public funds, leading to severe financial and democratic consequences. The Freedom People’s Congress has highlighted that the arbitrary cancellation of Local Government (LG) elections in January 2023 incurred unnecessary expenses of 10% of the overall Rs.8 billion budget.
In a letter to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, opposition leaders, and the Bribery and Corruption Commission, Alahapperuma emphasized that this decision burdened taxpayers and disrupted essential services such as healthcare and education. The Congress estimates additional damages at Rs.20 million due to election delays, demanding justice for all affected citizens.
Alahapperuma labeled the act as a “Local Government polls robbery,” equating it with major financial crimes like the Central Bank scandal. He urged the incumbent government to take swift legal action and demanded the return of misused funds to the public, reinforcing transparency and accountability. Citizens now await decisive measures to address these allegations, ensuring justice for over 22 million taxpayers.
