“From Crisis to Stability: I Gave Sajith and Anura Their Chance.” – Ranil
News Today: Economic stability under President Ranil Wickremesinghe
President Ranil Wickremesinghe emphasized the stability achieved under his leadership, allowing candidates like Sajith Premadasa and Anura Dissanayake to run for the Presidential Election. Speaking at the “Puluwan Sri Lanka” victory rally, he argued that the current economic stability contrasts with the chaos the country faced two years ago, highlighting his governance’s role in recovery. He criticized calls from Sajith and Anura for drastic changes, equating them to destroying the progress made. President Wickremesinghe urged the public to provide a mandate for continued economic stability, contrasting it with the instability seen in Bangladesh. He called for unity within the United National Party (UNP) and warned against compromising party principles. A vote for Sajith, he argued, would ultimately benefit Anura, undermining UNP’s vision.
Wickremesinghe recalled the severe shortages of food, fuel, and gas when he assumed leadership. He noted that the Leader of the Opposition declined to take charge during the crisis, prompting him to step in and stabilize the economy. His administration reduced inflation from 70% to 2%, cut prices of essential goods, and increased GDP to $84 billion in 2023. These achievements, he claimed, were a result of a collective effort and strategic governance.
He also emphasized the importance of building a strong foundation for future governance, urging the public for a mandate to construct this new “house” rather than tearing down what has been built. Wickremesinghe criticized Sajith and Anura’s proposals for tax reductions, arguing that such measures would destabilize the economy, reduce national revenue, and risk losing international support. He warned against reverting to the crisis conditions of 2022, advocating for continued economic stability to avoid becoming like Bangladesh.
Wickremesinghe appealed to the UNP members, urging them to remain loyal to the party’s core principles and not be swayed by opposing factions. He reiterated that the country’s success is tied to his leadership and that unity within the party is essential for moving the nation forward. He concluded by urging voters to support his vision of a stable, prosperous Sri Lanka, positioning his victory as a triumph for the entire country.
