Former Public Administration Ministry Secretary Priyantha Mayadunne was released on bail after being arrested for misusing state funds.

Former Public Administration Ministry Secretary Priyantha Mayadunne was granted bail after being arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on charges of misusing Rs. 183 million from the Cooperative Fund for the Isuru Saviya celebration held in Kurunegala in 2011 to mark International Cooperative Day.

After being produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court, Mayadunne was released on a surety bond of Rs. 200,000.

Investigation and Legal Proceedings

Police Media Spokesman SSP Buddhika Manathunga stated that the CID had been investigating the incident for some time, as Mayadunne had allegedly used public funds inappropriately. The investigation report was referred to the Attorney General (AG), who concluded that sufficient evidence was available to file charges against the suspect under Section 389 of the Penal Code.

Following this, Mayadunne, who was serving as the Cooperatives and Internal Trade Ministry Additional Secretary at the time of the 2011 incident, was arrested by the CID.

Bail Conditions and Court Appearance

The former ministry secretary was produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court on the day of his arrest, where he was granted bail on a Rs. 200,000 surety bond.

Legal experts anticipate that further proceedings will take place in the coming weeks, as authorities continue to examine the misuse of government funds and potential legal consequences.
