Urgent Flood Warning: Rising Waters Threaten Sri Lanka’s Kuda Ganga

News Today: Flood warnings issued for Kuda Ganga as water levels rise

The Irrigation Department has issued a flood warning for the Kuda Ganga area, alerting residents in Bulathsinhala, Palindanuwara, and Madurawala Divisional Secretariat (DS) divisions about rising water levels that pose serious threats in the next 24 hours. An ‘Amber’ warning has been declared following significant rainfall in the upstream catchment areas of the Kuda Ganga Sub Basin of the Kalu River as of 9:00 a.m. today.

The department’s analysis of the current rainfall and river water levels at Hydrological Stations in Kalu Ganga suggests a high likelihood of flooding in the low-lying areas of the Kuda Ganga and Maguru Ganga valleys within the next 48 hours. This warning will remain in effect until 9:00 a.m. on Monday (19th). The department further cautions that roads passing through the floodplains of the Kuda Ganga and Maguru Ganga are at risk of being submerged, urging motorists and residents to exercise extreme caution.

The Disaster Management Center has also advised the public in these vulnerable areas to take necessary precautions to safeguard lives and property. As floodwaters can rise rapidly, it is essential for those in affected regions to stay informed through local news and updates. This proactive approach is critical in minimizing the potential impact of the flood threat and ensuring community safety.
