News Today: Over 20 foreign observers to monitor Sri Lanka’s 2024 general election.
The National Election Commission of Sri Lanka has announced that more than 20 foreign election observers will monitor the 2024 general election to ensure transparency and integrity. According to RMAL Ratnayake, Chairman of the Commission, the group of observers will include representatives from South Asian countries as well as Russia and Thailand.
In a formal invitation extended by the National Election Commission, 10 observers are set to arrive in Sri Lanka to monitor various phases of the election process. Upon their arrival, the observers will meet with Commission members and then begin their duties, covering election procedures, voter rights, and overall election standards. These observers aim to provide unbiased reports on the proceedings and ensure international standards are maintained.
Additionally, the Chairman noted that a team from The Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL) has already met with the Election Commission officials and has commenced its monitoring role. ANFREL’s involvement highlights the regional commitment to supporting free and fair elections in Sri Lanka, bringing together observers experienced in democratic election standards.
The inclusion of foreign election monitors underscores Sri Lanka’s commitment to upholding democratic practices and transparent electoral processes.
