Former MP Demands Accountability for Easter Sunday Attack Oversight

News Today: Former Minister Requests Transparency on Easter Sunday Attack Evidence

Former MP Udaya Gammanpila, leader of the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU), has called for transparency from the government regarding evidence tied to the 2019 Easter Sunday attack. Yesterday, he submitted a formal request to the Presidential Secretariat’s information officer under the Right to Information Act, seeking records of statements made by Public Security Ministry Secretary Ravi Seneviratne before the committee led by A.N.J. De Alwis, which investigated the attacks.

According to reliable sources, Seneviratne reportedly admitted to the committee that he erred in handling a critical intelligence warning related to the Easter Sunday attack. He allegedly held onto a warning letter without action for 12 days while serving as the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the time. Gammanpila expressed that this inaction significantly compromised national security, and he is now pushing for the release of all relevant records from the committee proceedings.

Highlighting the importance of accountability and transparency, Gammanpila urged the government to provide clarity on the incident. He emphasized that public access to this information would be crucial in helping citizens understand the circumstances that led to the security breach during the Easter Sunday attacks.

By leveraging the Right to Information Act, Gammanpila seeks to hold public officials accountable and ensure the government addresses any failures that may have contributed to this tragic event.
