Former MP’s Son-in-Law Remanded Amid Shocking Vehicle Probe

News Today: Former MP Rohitha Abeygunawardena’s son-in-law remanded; daughter absconding in illegal vehicle case under intense scrutiny.

In a major development involving political connections and criminal allegations, Dhanushka Weerakkody, the son-in-law of former Minister and current MP Rohitha Abeygunawardena, has been remanded until August 1 by the Mathugama Magistrate’s Court. His remand comes following his voluntary surrender at the courthouse yesterday in relation to a case involving an illegally assembled vehicle.

The controversial vehicle in question was reportedly seized from the son of Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Jagath Withana, who has also been drawn into the unfolding legal drama. The illegal vehicle case has stirred public and media attention due to the involvement of politically linked individuals.

Weerakkody’s wife, the daughter of Rohitha Abeygunawardena, is also a suspect in the case but is currently absconding and evading arrest. According to police reports, efforts are ongoing to locate her. Authorities have searched multiple locations without success.

Law enforcement officials stated that if she fails to surrender, a court order will be sought to seize her assets as part of the legal process.

In a related turn of events, MP Jagath Withana’s son was arrested last Saturday by the Panadura Walana Anti-Vice Unit. He was initially remanded, but later released on bail by the Mathugama Magistrate.

The case continues to generate public concern, especially with the involvement of children of prominent political figures and allegations of vehicle tampering and illegal assembly.

This case underscores the growing pressure on law enforcement and judicial institutions to act independently and fairly, irrespective of the political affiliations of those involved.
