News Today: Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe summoned before CID over foreign tour investigation funded with State money
Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has been summoned to appear before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today in connection with an ongoing investigation into the alleged misuse of state funds for an overseas trip.
The inquiry focuses on Wickremesinghe’s official visit to New York, which was followed by a stop in London, where he attended a university graduation ceremony. Police sources state that while the New York segment was categorized as official, the London portion was personal in nature but was nevertheless financed using state money.
Authorities estimate the tour cost the government nearly Rs. 16.9 million, as it included a delegation of around ten individuals accompanying the former president. This has raised serious concerns about the possible misappropriation of public funds during his time in office.
As part of the investigation, the CID has already recorded statements from former presidential secretary Saman Ekanayake and former private secretary Sandra Perera, both of whom were closely involved in organizing the trip.
The summons of the former head of state marks the latest development in the growing probe into financial misconduct allegations during his presidency.
Political analysts note that this inquiry could have broader implications for Wickremesinghe’s legacy, especially given public sentiment around accountability and the use of taxpayer money by elected leaders.
The CID investigation is ongoing, and officials have confirmed that further questioning and document verification will continue as part of the legal process. For now, Wickremesinghe’s appearance before investigators is seen as a critical step in addressing allegations of state fund misuse.
