Former State Minister’s Bank Accounts Frozen Amid Corruption Probe

News Today: Bank Accounts of Ex-State Minister Anupa Pasqual Frozen for 3 Months

The Colombo High Court yesterday ordered the freezing of two bank accounts belonging to former State Minister Anupa Pasqual for three months. The order, issued by Judge Adithya Patabendige, is in effect until January 10, 2025. The accounts, located in Koggala and Mathugama, were frozen following a request by officials from the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption under the Anti-Corruption Act.

The Commission launched an investigation into claims that Pasqual had illegally accumulated wealth. As per the Anti-Corruption Act, bank accounts can initially be frozen for seven days, with the option to extend the freeze by an additional three months while investigations proceed. After reviewing the request, the Colombo High Court granted the order, allowing the investigation to continue and reports to be submitted to the court.

This case marks a significant step in the government’s ongoing efforts to combat corruption, reinforcing the legal mechanisms in place to hold public officials accountable for illegal financial activity. The frozen accounts are now subject to further examination as part of the broader investigation.
