General Election on November 14th, Parliament Dissolved

News Today: Parliament Dissolved and General Election Announced for November 14th, 2024

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has signed an Extraordinary Gazette notification to dissolve the Parliament, effective as of last night. The General Election will be held on November 14th, 2024, with nominations being accepted from October 4th to October 11th. The newly elected Parliament is expected to convene on November 21st, 2024.

In the meantime, National People’s Power (NPP) MP Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has been sworn in as Sri Lanka’s new Prime Minister. She also took oaths as the Minister of Justice, Education, Labour, Industries, Science and Technology, Health, and Investments. Dr. Amarasuriya’s historic appointment makes her the third female Prime Minister in Sri Lanka’s history, following Sirimavo Bandaranaike and Chandrika Kumaratunga.

Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, a National List Member of Parliament since 2020, previously worked as a senior lecturer at the Social Studies Department at the Open University of Sri Lanka. She is renowned for her work in youth unemployment, gender inequality, child protection, and her critique of inefficiencies within the Sri Lankan education system.
