News Today: German Lab Tainted Immunoglobulin & Fake Cancer Drugs Shock Sri Lanka
In a disturbing revelation shaking the Sri Lankan healthcare system, a WHO-accredited German laboratory has confirmed that a batch of Human Immunoglobulin imported to Sri Lanka was contaminated with dangerous bacteria, while another batch of Rituximab cancer drugs contained nothing more than saline solution, according to a Newsfirst report.
The findings were disclosed to the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court by Deputy Solicitor General Lakmini Girihagama, who stated that test results verified both medical imports were harmful to human health. The contaminated Human Immunoglobulin lacked any therapeutic components and was found to be composed of bacteria-infected water. Meanwhile, the Rituximab vials, supposed to treat cancer, contained no active ingredients, only sodium chloride — effectively saline solution.
This incident has led to widespread public outcry and legal investigations. The Attorney General’s Department has identified the eighth suspect in the case as former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, who submitted the procurement proposal through a Cabinet paper. The Sri Lankan government spent Rs. 144.74 million on the procurement of these non-therapeutic drugs, now under intense scrutiny.
The discovery raises serious concerns over patient safety, regulatory failure, and criminal negligence in public healthcare procurement. Authorities are expected to widen the investigation, and the public health sector is now facing one of its worst credibility crises in recent years.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story and ongoing legal proceedings linked to the contaminated Human Immunoglobulin and fake cancer drugs Sri Lanka scandal.
