News Today: The Sri Lankan government plans to develop Jaffna International Airport, enhancing facilities and regional connectivity.
The Government of Sri Lanka has announced plans to enhance and develop Jaffna International Airport (JIA) to improve regional connectivity and boost the local economy. The initiative aims to upgrade airport facilities and provide better services for passengers, particularly those traveling from Jaffna to Colombo and other destinations.
Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation Minister Bimal Ratnayake recently conducted an inspection of JIA, where he engaged with airport staff from all departments to assess the existing infrastructure and operational challenges.
Following his visit, Minister Ratnayake confirmed that the government is committed to supporting the growth of JIA by providing the necessary resources, legal amendments, and structural upgrades.
“Many travelers from Jaffna currently use Katunayake Airport. To better serve them, we aim to expand Palali Airport’s capacity. This may require amending Sri Lanka’s aviation laws to accommodate domestic flights,” he stated.
The Minister also emphasized that developing Jaffna International Airport is a crucial step in rebuilding the Jaffna community, which was significantly impacted by the war.
Key upgrades planned include:
✅ Runway extension to accommodate larger aircraft.
✅ Construction of a modern terminal to enhance passenger safety and comfort.
✅ Feasibility studies and structured business plans to ensure sustainable development.
According to the Airport Authority Chairman, there are sufficient funds allocated for these projects, and the government aims to begin work soon.
