Heavy Floods Wreak Havoc Across Europe Today

News Today: Heavy floods devastate Europe as emergency services brace for more rain

Heavy floods have caused widespread destruction across Central and Eastern Europe, with emergency services working tirelessly to shore up flood defenses. Torrential rainfall, brought by Storm Boris, has swelled rivers and led to severe damage in multiple countries. In Romania, floods claimed the lives of four people in the south-eastern region of Galati, while in the Czech Republic, evacuations were ordered and 51,000 households in the northern regions were left without power.

Flood barriers were erected in Prague to prevent further damage, and in Poland, towns such as Glucholazy were evacuated after rivers burst their banks. Local residents are bracing for the worst, with many piling up sandbags to protect their homes, but some are finding the situation difficult to manage. “It’s impossible to predict what will happen,” said Piotr Jakubiec, a resident of Glucholazy.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis remarked on the increasing frequency of extreme weather events, linking them to the growing impact of climate change. Europe, like much of the world, is seeing a rise in heavy precipitation as warmer air holds more moisture, leading to intense rainfall and floods.

In Poland’s southwestern Opole region, firefighters joined residents in preparing for the floodwaters. The city of Krakow, Poland’s second-largest city, also initiated flood protection measures. Meanwhile, in the Czech Republic’s South Bohemia region, a dam burst, exacerbating the already dire situation.

Authorities across the region are urging residents to remain vigilant, with many bracing for further rains and possible flash floods.
