Hezbollah Accuses Israel of Deadly Pager Explosions
News Today: Hezbollah accuses Israel of deadly pager explosions
Hezbollah has accused Israel of orchestrating deadly pager explosions that killed nine people, including a child, across Lebanon. The country’s health minister reported that 2,800 others were injured, with 200 in critical condition. The explosions, which took place in Beirut and other regions, involved handheld pagers used by Hezbollah members for communication.
Hezbollah, backed by Iran, confirmed the deaths of eight of its fighters and vowed to retaliate, labeling the incident as “criminal aggression.” The group relies on pagers to avoid the risks of mobile phone hacking or tracking. Hezbollah’s media office announced that several fighters were “martyred on the road to Jerusalem.”
Among the injured was Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon, while a 10-year-old daughter of a Hezbollah member and the son of a Hezbollah MP were confirmed among the dead. Footage from CCTV showed one of the explosions occurring in a man’s bag or pocket at a supermarket, causing panic among shoppers.
The Israeli military has declined to comment on Hezbollah’s accusations. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati condemned the explosions as a “serious violation of Lebanese sovereignty,” while Hezbollah reiterated that it holds Israel fully responsible for the attacks. As tensions escalate, the international community remains concerned about the volatile situation in Lebanon.
