Historic No-Confidence Motion Filed Against Sri Lankan Speaker
The motion of no confidence against Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena was recently delivered to the Deputy Secretary General of Parliament, Chaminda Kularatne.
The submission was made by Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella, along with MPs Ranjith Madduma Bandara and Professor G.L. Peiris.
A total of 41 Members of Parliament have endorsed the motion.
This event stands as a historic first in the annals of Sri Lankan parliamentary proceedings, with no other Speaker having encountered a motion of this nature before.
At the heart of the motion lies accusations of the Speaker’s purported failure to fulfill his duties during the third segment of the enactment process for the Online Safety Act in the legislative assembly. Opposition factions claim he entirely neglected his obligations.
