India Declines Champions Trophy in Pakistan

News Today: India Declines to Participate in Champions Trophy in Pakistan

India has officially informed the International Cricket Council (ICC) that it will not be traveling to Pakistan for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, intensifying tensions between the two cricket boards. Following the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has sought guidance from the Pakistan government on the way forward. The PCB has taken a firm stance, ruling out a hybrid hosting model, a format previously employed during the Asia Cup 2023, where India’s matches were played in a neutral venue.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who is also Pakistan’s Interior Minister, emphasized that Pakistan would be unwilling to hold matches outside the country. This stance underscores Pakistan’s commitment to hosting the entire Champions Trophy on home soil—the first ICC event in Pakistan since 1996.

The absence of India from the Champions Trophy could jeopardize global broadcast rights and audience engagement, as the India-Pakistan rivalry is a major draw. ICC officials, including incoming chair Jay Shah, face the challenging task of navigating this critical situation.

Amid these developments, Pakistan has postponed the countdown event for the Champions Trophy originally scheduled in Lahore. Pakistan’s government is expected to urge the ICC to obtain a formal reason for India’s decision and clarification from the Indian government.
