An Indian delegation of 12 officials is set to visit Sri Lanka today to hold significant discussions aimed at addressing the Indo–Sri Lanka fisheries issues and advancing mutual fisheries development. Hosted at the Mahaweli Ministry auditorium in Colombo, these discussions are scheduled to commence tomorrow and will involve both countries’ fisheries and diplomatic leaders.
Prominent officials, including Fisheries Ministry Secretary Nishantha Wickramasinghe, Additional Secretary Dhammika Ranatunga, Fisheries Director General Susantha Kahawatta, and representatives from NARA, the Aquaculture Development Authority, Coast Guard, Foreign Ministry, Attorney General’s Department, Navy, and Police, are expected to contribute to the discussions.
Key issues to be addressed include resolving the Indo–Sri Lanka fishing problem through diplomatic negotiations, focusing on harmful fishing practices like bottom trawling, which affects marine sustainability. Expanding cooperative fishing relations between India and Sri Lanka will also be a major discussion point to benefit both nations’ fisheries industries.
