Israel Air Strike on Beirut’s Suburbs Sparks Tensions

News Today: Israel Beirut Air Strike Targets Hezbollah Site

Israel has carried out a significant air strike on the southern suburbs of Beirut, Lebanon, targeting an area believed to be used by Hezbollah. The strike comes despite a ceasefire agreement that had been in place for the past five months, raising serious concerns about renewed conflict in the region.

According to Israeli military sources, the targeted site was a Hezbollah storage facility containing “precision-guided missiles,” posing a direct threat to Israel and its civilians. Prior to the strike, the Israeli army reportedly issued an evacuation order to residents of the Hadath neighborhood, where the attack later took place.

Live footage captured by Reuters showed a massive plume of smoke rising from the targeted building. Fortunately, Lebanon’s Civil Defence confirmed that no casualties were reported, and firefighting crews quickly brought the blaze under control.

Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun condemned the attack in a statement posted on X, urging the United States and France—co-brokers of the November ceasefire—to pressure Israel to halt further aggression. He warned that Israel’s continued operations could destabilize the fragile peace and escalate tensions across the region.

The Israeli government defended the strike, arguing that Hezbollah’s weapons stockpile violated the ceasefire understandings and endangered Israeli citizens. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office emphasized that Hezbollah must not be allowed to strengthen further, declaring that Beirut’s Dahiyeh neighborhood would not be a “safe haven” for the militant group.

UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, told Legacy Daily that the strike “generated panic and fear” among civilians yearning for stability. She urged all parties to immediately halt actions that could jeopardize the ceasefire agreement.
