News Today: Eastern Tamil Alliance MOU Signed
Batticaloa, Sri Lanka – Former Deputy Minister V. Muralitharan (Karuna) and former State Minister C. Chandrakanthan (Pillayan) have officially joined the newly formed Eastern Tamil Alliance, strengthening their political influence ahead of the upcoming Local Government elections in Sri Lanka.
The Eastern Tamil Alliance, led by Shivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, was formed following setbacks in past parliamentary elections. Former State Minister Sathasivam Wiyalendran co-founded the party, aiming to unify Tamil political forces in the Eastern Province.
MOU Signed to Strengthen Tamil Political Unity
A crucial Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed yesterday between the Eastern Tamil Alliance and the Tamil United Freedom Party, which is led by Karuna. This alliance is set to reshape Tamil politics in Sri Lanka as both parties gear up for the 2025 Local Government elections.
The Eastern Tamil Alliance aims to consolidate Tamil representation and influence in the Eastern Province, focusing on political empowerment and regional development. The MOU signing event in Batticaloa marked a significant milestone in this effort.
Karuna and Pillayan: A History of Influence
Both Karuna and Pillayan were prominent figures in the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) before entering mainstream politics. Their political journey has been marked by shifting alliances, electoral challenges, and significant roles in Sri Lanka’s governance.
With this strategic political move, the Eastern Tamil Alliance and the Tamil United Freedom Party are expected to contest the upcoming elections as a unified force, increasing their chances of securing key positions in local governance.
This development is expected to reshape the political landscape in Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province, where Tamil political representation has been fragmented in recent years.
