News Today: Lasantha Wickrematunga’s Daughter Appeals for Justice
Colombo, Sri Lanka – Ahimsa Wickramatunga, daughter of slain journalist Lasantha Wickrematunga, has appealed to the Prime Minister for an impeachment motion against the Attorney General over alleged misconduct in the murder investigation of her father.
In her detailed letter, Ahimsa accuses the Attorney General of abusing power and neglecting duty by recommending the release of three key suspects involved in her father’s assassination. These individuals were identified in the latest investigation by the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court, yet the Attorney General has allegedly obstructed justice by pushing for their release.
Ahimsa expressed deep concern over what she describes as an institutional failure in prosecuting those responsible for her father’s murder. She criticized the Attorney General’s Office for delaying justice and failing to uphold the rule of law.
Lasantha Wickrematunga, a fearless journalist and founder of The Sunday Leader, was assassinated in January 2009—a crime that remains unresolved. Ahimsa has continuously fought for accountability, urging authorities to take action against those responsible, including high-ranking officials allegedly involved in covering up the case.
This latest appeal adds pressure on the Sri Lankan government to ensure a fair and transparent investigation. Ahimsa’s plea has sparked public outrage, with human rights activists and press freedom organizations voicing support for her demand for justice.
