News Today: London Marathon 2025 World Record Number of Finishers
The 45th London Marathon 2025 delivered an unforgettable day in the capital, setting a world record for finishers in a mass participation race, surpassing New York’s previous record of 55,646. By 6:30 PM, the number of finishers was confirmed to be higher than ever before. With perfect spring weather and a historic turnout, the London Marathon 2025 World Record Number of Finishers is now etched into the books.
Race director Hugh Brasher reported an estimated 800,000 spectators, around 60,000 more than usual, cheering runners along the 26.2-mile route. “It’s an extraordinary day not just for the race, but for humanity,” said Brasher. “This is about more than running — it’s about people coming together.”
Among the runners were Sergio Aguiar and David Stancombe, raising funds in memory of their daughters lost in the Southport attack. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer paid tribute to their courage. Also finishing the race was Lindsay Burrow, wife of the late rugby legend Rob Burrow, who died in 2024 from motor neurone disease.
Ethiopian athlete Tigist Assefa won the women’s race with a new women’s-only world record of 2:15.50. British runner Eilish McColgan placed eighth in her marathon debut, while Alex Yee, Olympic triathlon gold medalist, finished the men’s race in an impressive 2:11.08.
Adding a fun twist, Chris “Rhino Boy” Green set his 113th record running in a full 3D rhino costume for Save the Rhino charity.
With 42 Guinness World Records broken, the 2025 marathon was a celebration of endurance, humanity, and community. Hugh Brasher concluded, “It’s not about breaking records, but giving people a chance to experience something life-affirming.”
London once again proved why this marathon is one of the world’s greatest – a true celebration of human spirit.
