A 44-year-old man from Thelwatte, Hikkaduwa has been arrested for taking a selfie with his ballot paper at the Thelwatta Sumanarama Temple polling station in Meetiyagoda during Sri Lanka’s Presidential Election 2024. Galle District Returning Officer W. A. Dharmasiri confirmed that the man was caught by authorities while casting his vote and photographing his ballot paper, an action strictly prohibited under election regulations.

The use of mobile phones inside polling stations, counting stations, and result announcement centers is strictly forbidden, as it compromises the integrity and privacy of the voting process. This arrest highlights the importance of adhering to the rules established by the National Election Commission to ensure a fair and free election.

The incident has drawn attention to the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and election officials in maintaining order and transparency during the voting process. The man will face legal action for violating election laws, with the police continuing to monitor polling stations for any further violations.

Voters are urged to follow all election regulations, including the ban on mobile phones, to ensure a smooth and respectful election process.
