News Today: Mendis Named ICC Player of the Month for September 2024
The ICC has named Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis as the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for September 2024, highlighting his remarkable form in Test cricket. Mendis continued his incredible streak, scoring 451 runs at an average of 90.20 across four Tests, including a century (114) in Galle and a match-winning 182 against New Zealand. His consistent performances also made him the first player in 75 years to reach 1,000 Test runs in record time.
This marks the second time Mendis has won the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award, following his March 2024 victory. He beat competitors Travis Head and Prabath Jayasuriya. England’s Tammy Beaumont claimed the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for her success in Ireland, making it her second award as well.
Mendis expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am honoured to receive this recognition again. It motivates me to continue striving for bigger achievements for my team and our fans.”
Sri Lanka’s cricketers have had a successful run in recent months, with Dunith Wellalage and Harshitha Samarawickrama winning ICC monthly awards in August. Mendis’ stellar performances add to the country’s cricketing accolades and bring pride to Sri Lankan fans worldwide.
