The Department of Meteorology has issued a red alert for land and sea areas around Sri Lanka. This advisory, issued at 4:00 PM today, will remain valid for 24 hours until 4:00 PM tomorrow.
According to the Met Department, the low-pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression, impacting the central-southwest Bay of Bengal. Deputy Director Meril Mendis confirmed the severity of the situation, urging the public to remain vigilant.
In addition to the red alert, landslide warnings remain in effect for six districts: Badulla, Galle, Matara, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, and Ratnapura. Residents in these areas are advised to stay alert and follow guidelines issued by local authorities to ensure safety during this period.
The Met Department has also warned fishermen and naval operators to avoid venturing into deep and shallow sea areas surrounding the island, as conditions are expected to worsen with strong winds and rough seas.
