News Today: SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa Criticizes Government for Accountability Issues
Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa has recently accused several government ministers of failing to uphold accountability and demonstrating a lack of foresight in their governance. During a press conference, Rajapaksa raised concerns about ministers who had previously promised to implement a range of plans but now appeared to be backpedaling or ignoring the commitments made to the public.
Rajapaksa questioned whether the government’s policy statement had been presented with knowingly false promises, as some ministers now claim that not all parts of the policy need to be carried out. This contradiction has left many citizens and political observers questioning the sincerity and commitment of the ruling party to their pre-election promises.
Reflecting on the election campaign, Rajapaksa pointed out that the graduates who campaigned for the government and supported its policies are now being “chased away” by the very leaders they once supported. He also mentioned the disturbing trend of political witch-hunts resurfacing, a situation that his family, particularly his own political career, has become all too familiar with.
Further commenting on the political climate, Rajapaksa expressed his concerns regarding the imprisonment of MP Chamara Sampath. He noted that speaking out or challenging the government in Parliament often results in repressive measures, such as imprisonment. While attempts to imprison Rajapaksa himself were unsuccessful, he remarked that his younger brother and grandmother were targeted as a means of political retaliation.
Rajapaksa also highlighted the contradiction in the government’s approach by pointing out that they had appointed 159 professors and doctors to Parliament, yet now the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is focused on investigating their academic credentials. This, he claims, has led to a significant delay in other important governmental matters that require attention.
Rajapaksa concluded his statement by emphasizing the need for real political accountability, transparent governance, and adherence to promises made to the people of Sri Lanka.
