National Chamber President Confident in USD 19B Export Goal

News Today:  National Chamber Export Target of USD 19 Billion Achievable with Strategic Efforts

The President of the National Chamber of Exporters (NCE), Indhra Kaushal Rajapaksa, expressed confidence in Sri Lanka’s ambitious national export target of USD 19 billion for 2025. In a recent statement, Rajapaksa emphasized that the goal is certainly within reach, but achieving it will require collective efforts, strategic partnerships, and unwavering commitment from both the public and private sectors.

Rajapaksa pointed out that while the target is attainable, exporters must be aware of the challenges that lie ahead, such as bureaucratic hurdles, trade barriers, and policy uncertainties. He stressed the importance of addressing these challenges to ensure smooth export growth and stability.

“Many of our proposals have been reflected in the National Budget, but our work does not stop there,” Rajapaksa said. “One critical issue we continue to highlight is the removal of the SVAT scheme. If proper mechanisms are not in place to streamline VAT refunds, exporters—especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)—will face significant cash flow challenges.” He further emphasized that the NCE would continue to vigorously lobby for a smooth transition in this area to protect the interests of its members.

In addition, Rajapaksa urged policymakers and stakeholders to engage with the NCE before introducing new trade-related policies, ensuring that such policies are aligned with the national export goals and do not create unintended obstacles for exporters.

One of the key strategies Rajapaksa outlined for increasing export performance is the diversification of Sri Lanka’s export product basket. He noted that by focusing on high-potential sectors such as boat and shipbuilding, marine offshore services, electronics, processed food, renewable energy solutions, and vehicle accessories manufacturing, Sri Lanka could enhance its competitive edge in the global market.

Rajapaksa also highlighted Sri Lanka’s unique geographic location, positioning the country as a potential hub for shipbuilding, marine services, and offshore industries within the Indian Ocean region. This could unlock new economic prospects and bolster Sri Lanka’s position in the global maritime sector.

Additionally, Rajapaksa reaffirmed that the NCE would continue working closely with Sri Lankan missions overseas, establishing a robust mechanism to enhance trade-related activities. “We have received the fullest assurance from the relevant ministries that all Sri Lankan missions will play an active and aggressive role in connecting Sri Lankan exporters with potential buyers and facilitating foreign direct investments (FDIs),” he added.

Rajapaksa concluded by stating that the NCE would work to establish a platform that enables members to engage effectively with Sri Lankan missions, fostering stronger international trade connections and supporting export growth.
