New Covid Subvariants Detected in Sri Lanka – Health Alert

News Today: Detection of LF.7 and XFG New Covid subvariants in Sri Lanka.

The Medical Research Institute (MRI) of Sri Lanka has officially confirmed the presence of two emerging Omicron New Covid subvariants, LF.7 and XFG, within the country. This revelation comes after routine genetic sequencing was conducted on samples collected from hospitals island-wide as part of the country’s ongoing Covid-19 surveillance program.

According to Dr. Jude Jayamaha, virologist at the Health Ministry, the detection of these Sri Lanka Covid Subvariants LF.7 and XFG June 2025 Update should not cause immediate alarm. “There is no reason for undue concern at this stage,” he said, emphasizing that such viral evolutions are expected and part of the natural mutation process of Covid-19.

Dr. Jayamaha noted that the health sector remains proactive, with the MRI continuing its monitoring and sequencing efforts. The newly detected LF.7 and XFG variants have also been identified in other parts of Asia in recent months.
