New Minimum Speed Limit on Expressways to Prevent Accidents

Transport Minister Bandula Gunawardana announced today steps to implement a minimum speed limit on expressways, citing the role of slow-moving vehicles in causing accidents. During the weekly Cabinet briefing, Gunawardana highlighted the absence of a minimum speed limit despite a maximum limit of 100 kmph.

He emphasized that many accidents occur while overtaking slower vehicles and underscored the necessity of establishing a minimum speed threshold to mitigate such incidents. The Minister confirmed that consultations with field experts and relevant authorities, including the police, have been conducted regarding expressway accidents. New regulations and rules will be issued in an official gazette notification within the next two weeks.
