NPP’s Plan: Foreign Management for Sri Lanka Telecom
News Today: NPP Plans to Assign Foreign Investors to Manage Sri Lanka Telecom
National People’s Power (NPP) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake has announced plans to assign foreign investors to manage Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) if his party is elected to power. Addressing reporters at a recent Financial Forum, Dissanayake clarified that while the NPP opposes selling state assets, they are considering entrusting local firms like SLT to foreign investors for better management and efficiency.
Dissanayake explained that discussions with SLT engineers revealed a lack of sufficient capacity to manage SLT as a high-tech entity, especially given the rapid advancements in technology. “We learned that Sri Lanka Telecom lacks the necessary resources to keep up with its evolving needs,” Dissanayake stated. “Thus, we are compelled to assign a foreign investor to oversee its operations to ensure it remains competitive and technologically advanced.”
Furthermore, Dissanayake highlighted that the NPP has ambitious plans to develop various industries in Sri Lanka but faces significant challenges, including a shortage of skilled human resources. To address this, the NPP is committed to enhancing skill development by sending students who have successfully completed their Advanced Level (A/L) examinations to foreign universities. This initiative will be funded by the government to ensure the country has a skilled workforce capable of driving future economic growth.
The NPP’s strategy aims to bolster Sri Lanka’s economy by improving local companies’ management capabilities and investing in human capital development, ensuring long-term sustainability and growth.
