News Today: Sajith Premadasa criticizes the government for social media suppression using the PTA, calling for accountability.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has condemned the government’s alleged use of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) to suppress social media activists. Speaking during the adjournment debate on the government’s policy statement in Parliament, Premadasa criticized this approach, emphasizing its contradiction to the promises made by the government to the people.
Premadasa stated, “We fully support programmes beneficial to the country and oppose those that harm it. However, we see the PTA being used to deprive citizens of their freedom and suppress media. Is it fair to target social media activists using this act?”
He further questioned why a government that received significant support from the social media sector is now allegedly suppressing it. Premadasa also recalled earlier promises made by the government to repeal the PTA entirely, urging the administration to uphold its commitments and cease any media-related oppression.
The Opposition Leader’s remarks highlight growing concerns over freedom of expression and the potential misuse of legislation in Sri Lanka. This development raises questions about the balance between national security and individual rights.
