PM Blasts Opposition’s Poor Conduct and Vision

News Today: Prime Minister Criticizes Opposition’s Conduct, Vision & Behavior

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has strongly criticized the Opposition’s lack of conduct, vision, and behavior, stating that the public will no longer support outdated and corrupt political figures—regardless of their rebranding efforts as independent candidates. Her remarks came during a series of public rallies held in Kalapaluwawa, Pothuarawa, Akuregoda, and Borallugoda on April 30, just days ahead of the upcoming local elections.

Dr. Amarasuriya emphasized that Sri Lanka is facing its third election in six months, and the time has come to elect capable leaders at the grassroots level who can effectively support the government’s systematic development programmes.

“We inherited not just an economic collapse, but an institutional breakdown,” the Prime Minister declared. She pointed out that Pradeshiya Sabhas, being the closest tier of governance to citizens, need strong leadership to address community needs and public services.

Referring to the Opposition’s strategy of contesting under new symbols as independent groups, she stated, “It’s old wine in new bottles. The people see through the façade.” Dr. Amarasuriya added that figures like Pillayan being projected as national heroes illustrates the Opposition’s desperate crisis of relevance.

She warned that unless the Opposition undergoes genuine transformation, the public will continue to reject them. “We do need a strong opposition. But not one that refuses to change,” she added. “Mere rebranding will not bring victory.”

Highlighting corruption in past school admissions, she explained how Ministers and secretaries previously issued letters to place children in popular schools, overcrowding classrooms and compromising education quality. Under the current administration, these practices will be stopped. Only proper procedures will be followed, even if it means facing political backlash.

Dr. Amarasuriya concluded by urging the public to support candidates with integrity and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to long-term reforms: “This journey is not easy. But together, we are rebuilding this nation—one step at a time.”
