Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardene officially tendered his resignation moments ago in a letter addressed to President-elect Anura Kumara Dissanayake. In his letter, Gunawardene explained that with a new president elected, it was only appropriate for him to step down, allowing the new leadership to form a fresh Cabinet.
Gunawardene emphasized that his resignation would ensure that the newly elected president would face no obstacles in the process of appointing a new Cabinet of Ministers. He stated, “As a new president has been elected, I believe it is my duty to step aside and allow the process to continue smoothly without hindrance.”
