Strategic Talks: Sri Lanka Strengthens EU, Poland Relations

News Today: Poland Sri Lanka EU Strengthen Diplomatic and Economic Ties

In a key diplomatic engagement, Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, currently on an official visit to Sri Lanka, met with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday. The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation between Sri Lanka, the European Union, and Poland, reflecting a renewed commitment to strengthening historic and economic ties.

As President of the Council of the European Union, Sikorski emphasized the EU’s strategic interest in fostering deeper engagement with Sri Lanka. During the high-level dialogue, President Dissanayake highlighted the need for continued EU support, especially in light of emerging global economic challenges including the new U.S. tariff regime and fiscal restrictions from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The President underscored Sri Lanka’s intention to broaden partnerships with the EU to address rising financial pressures, and thanked the EU for maintaining the GSP+ trade concession, a critical benefit for Sri Lanka’s export economy.

Foreign Minister Sikorski acknowledged the 50 years of enduring relations and reaffirmed both Poland’s and the EU’s interest in strengthening bilateral trade, economic collaboration, and diplomatic partnerships. He expressed optimism about working closely with Sri Lanka’s new administration for mutual growth.

The meeting was attended by EU Ambassador Carmen Moreno, President’s Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, and Senior Additional Secretary Roshan Gamage, marking a significant step in advancing multilateral cooperation.

This visit underscores the growing importance of Sri Lanka’s role in regional diplomacy, and the continued support from European partners amid evolving global economic dynamics.
