Urgent Action: Police Ordered to Clear Pending Investigations Fast

News Today: Police Given Ultimatum to Complete Pending Investigations

Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya has issued an ultimatum, urging police officers to address the backlog of minor complaints that have gone unresolved at police stations. This directive focuses on ensuring that these pending investigations are completed within two weeks. The police spokesman, DIG Nihal Thalduwa, revealed that numerous complaints lodged at various stations remain incomplete, with little to no investigation.

The Acting IGP stressed that neglecting minor issues can result in these matters escalating into more serious crimes, which could significantly harm public trust in the police force. To prevent this, he instructed all Officers-In-Charge (OICs) of police stations to initiate investigations as soon as minor complaints are received and to ensure their completion within 48 hours.

Senior police officials, including Provincial Senior DIGs, have also been ordered to monitor the performance of these officers and report any OICs who fail to comply. The directive aims to improve police accountability and restore confidence in the justice system.

With the completion of these minor cases, the public is expected to see quicker resolution times, reinforcing the role of the police in safeguarding the community.
