News Today: Police investigations continue as authorities pursue former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon
Sri Lanka Police have intensified their search for former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, following court orders to locate and arrest him. Police Media Spokesman SSP Buddhika Manathunga confirmed today that investigations are actively underway, with authorities exploring multiple leads to track his whereabouts.
Despite continuous efforts, the police have yet to locate Tennakoon. “We are following all possible leads, but so far, we have not been successful,” SSP Manathunga told Legacy Daily.
Public Urged to Assist in the Investigation
Authorities are urging the public to provide any relevant information about Tennakoon’s location. “If anyone has any information regarding his whereabouts, they should report it to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) immediately,” SSP Manathunga stated.
He further emphasized that Tennakoon will not receive any special privileges despite his former high-ranking position. “Being a former IGP does not exempt him from the law. He will be brought to justice just like anyone else,” he added.
Additionally, Manathunga issued a stern warning to individuals who may be aiding or harboring Tennakoon, stating that they could face legal consequences under Section 209 of the Penal Code. “Anyone helping him evade arrest will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” he warned.
Police Investigative Efforts and Travel Ban
Authorities have been investigating all reported sightings of Tennakoon but have yet to confirm any verified leads. The police are also tracking telephone communications related to the case in hopes of gathering more information.
Meanwhile, a foreign travel ban has been imposed on Deshabandu Tennakoon to prevent him from fleeing the country. Police confirmed that airport authorities have been notified, ensuring that he cannot leave Sri Lanka legally.
