Police have made a major discovery after recovering over 5,000 rounds of live ammunition from the Galenbindunuwewa tank, following a vital tip-off from a concerned villager.

According to police reports, the incident unfolded when a local man ventured into a nearby jungle to collect firewood. On his way back, he stepped into the tank to wash his feet and noticed a large number of suspicious metallic objects beneath the water. Upon closer inspection, he realized they were live bullets. Acting responsibly, he immediately contacted the authorities through the 119 emergency hotline.

Responding swiftly, a special police team led by Galenbindunuwewa Police OIC M. M. D. N. Chathuranga Muramudali arrived at the scene. The officers successfully recovered a total of 5,038 assorted live rounds from one section of the tank. These rounds varied in type and calibre, suggesting possible links to illegal arms activity or previous undisclosed incidents in the region.

Authorities confirmed that search operations are ongoing, with divers and special units combing through the tank and surrounding areas to determine if more ammunition is concealed underwater or nearby. The investigation is being carried out under the direct supervision of North Central Province SDIG Buddhika Siriwardena.

This recovery has raised concerns about the origin of the ammunition and whether it is connected to criminal activity, past armed conflicts, or potential smuggling. Police have not ruled out any possibilities and are appealing to the public for further information that could assist in the investigation.
