Political Parties Accused of Using Children in Election Campaigns
News Today: Political parties using children in campaigns sparks concern
The Institute for Democratic Reforms and Electoral Studies (IRES) has raised concerns about political parties using children in election-related campaigns. Evidence of such activities has surfaced on social media, according to Manjula Gajanayake, Executive Director of IRES. Election monitors have strongly urged political parties to refrain from involving children in campaign activities such as canvassing, and creating videos or photos.
Commissioner General of Elections, Saman Sri Ratnayake, confirmed that the Election Commission has received multiple complaints about this issue. In response, the Commission has urged the National Child Protection Authority to intervene and take necessary actions to protect children from being exploited during election campaigns. With growing concern over this unethical practice, authorities are looking to ensure that future campaigns adhere to child protection laws.
