News Today: President Anura Kumara Dissanayake Explains Sri Lanka’s Defence Agreement with India
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake assured the public that the recently discussed defence agreement between Sri Lanka and India is entirely in line with existing joint operations, training programmes, and research activities between the two nations. The President made this statement during an election rally in Galle, where he also addressed concerns about the need for international cooperation in the defence sector.
He emphasized that Sri Lanka must seek assistance from other countries with advanced technological capabilities and expertise in defence to strengthen its own national security. The President further explained that, due to the lack of investment in science and technology development by previous governments over the past 76 years, the current administration is left with no option but to turn to other nations for collaboration.
The President’s remarks were intended to clarify that the defence agreement with India is not an isolated decision, but part of a broader strategy to enhance Sri Lanka’s defence capabilities. By engaging in joint operations and training with India, the country aims to better equip its forces and improve security for the Sri Lankan people.
This agreement is part of a larger diplomatic effort to foster closer ties with neighboring countries and enhance Sri Lanka’s security infrastructure through collaboration and knowledge-sharing.
While some critics have raised concerns over the agreement, the President assured that all activities under this pact will be in line with Sri Lanka’s national interests, sovereignty, and strategic goals.
