News Today: President AKD equal before the law ensures justice for every citizen
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake yesterday reaffirmed that everyone must be equal before the law, pledging his firm commitment to building a society rooted in justice and accountability.
Speaking at the National Bhikkhu Day commemoration ceremony at Temple Trees, Colombo, under the theme “Kalo Ayan Te – This is Your Time,” the President addressed an audience of over 5,000 monks from across Sri Lanka. He emphasized that crime, corruption, abuse of power, or misuse of public funds will not be tolerated, regardless of wealth, status, or political lineage.
“Justice will be served without fear or favor. This is not revenge or political witch-hunting—it is about restoring public trust,” he declared.
Highlighting how the rule of law had been eroded in the past, President Dissanayake condemned the double standards that once shielded the powerful from accountability while ordinary citizens suffered. He criticized the dynastic political culture that prioritized power and wealth over the people’s welfare.
“We are resolutely committed to reversing this destructive course. No matter the criticism, we will not turn back,” he said, stressing that failure to act would mean no future government could restore justice.
The President also noted that privileges tied to political authority have already been curtailed under his leadership. He urged politicians to realize that authority is not a license to exploit public wealth but a duty to serve with conscience.
“A leader who has squandered billions of the people’s money cannot ask citizens to rebuild the nation. From this point forward, political power will never again be a tool for plunder,” he concluded.
This bold declaration signals a renewed vision where fairness, accountability, and equal justice form the foundation of Sri Lanka’s future.
