News Today: President Anura Kumara Dissanayake UNGA 2025 and Japan visit in September
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is set for a high-profile diplomatic schedule in September 2025, with two major international engagements — the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80) in New York and a State visit to Japan.
The Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath’s media office confirmed the visits, noting that exact dates are yet to be finalised. The 80th UNGA will commence on September 9, 2025, in New York City, with the high-level General Debate, where world leaders address the assembly, beginning on September 23.
In his UNGA address, President Dissanayake is expected to present Sri Lanka’s economic progress, highlight the government’s reform agenda, and engage in bilateral talks with several world leaders on the sidelines.
Following the UNGA, the President will head to Japan for an official State visit. A key highlight will be his participation in Expo 2025 Osaka, where he will attend Sri Lanka Day to promote the nation’s culture, products, and investment opportunities. The Osaka Expo, which began on April 13 and will run until October 13, 2025, features participation from over 160 countries and international organisations — the largest number in Japan’s Expo history.
This participation marks a policy reversal from the previous administration, which had decided against attending the Expo. The current government sees the event as a valuable platform for boosting Sri Lanka’s global image, showcasing export potential, and attracting foreign direct investment (FDI).
Officials also emphasised the strategic importance of the President’s visit to Japan, as the country remains one of Sri Lanka’s key economic partners in Asia, with strong trade, tourism, and development cooperation ties.
Both the UNGA appearance and the Japan State visit are expected to enhance Sri Lanka’s global standing and open avenues for deeper diplomatic, economic, and cultural engagements on the international stage.
