News Today: President issues Gazette to maintain law and order nationwide
President Ranil Wickremesinghe has issued a Gazette notification, authorizing the Armed Forces to maintain law and order across Sri Lanka with immediate effect. This directive empowers the Army, Navy, and Air Force to oversee public safety during the critical period leading up to the national election. The mobilization involves maintaining public order in multiple administrative districts, including Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Jaffna, Mannar, Mullaithivu, Batticaloa, Ampara, Trincomalee, Puttalam, and their adjacent territorial waters. Additionally, the districts of Kandy, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Badulla, Moneragala, Ratnapura, and Kegalle will also see increased military presence.
The decision comes amid heightened concerns over security and the need to ensure a smooth electoral process. By deploying the Armed Forces across these regions, the government aims to prevent any disruptions and maintain stability. As part of this initiative, the security forces will coordinate closely with local law enforcement agencies to ensure that law and order are preserved in all designated areas.
The public is urged to cooperate with the Armed Forces and report any suspicious activities. The Gazette further outlines the role of the Armed Forces in providing additional support to the police in managing any public unrest or disturbances. This move reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding citizens and ensuring a peaceful environment leading up to the election.
