News Today: President Accuses SJB of Vote-Stealing and Challenges Political Integrity

Independent Presidential Candidate and current President Ranil Wickremesinghe has made bold accusations against the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), accusing them of engaging in vote-stealing tactics. During his address at the 73rd anniversary celebration of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), President Wickremesinghe emphasized that the current government has demonstrated that political parties can unite for the benefit of the country, which has paved the way for the ongoing efforts to build a new Sri Lanka.

President Wickremesinghe claimed that the SJB has resorted to unethical means, including attempting to steal votes from Tamil parties, which has subsequently weakened their position in certain regions, such as Jaffna. “What have the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and National People’s Power (NPP) contributed to the country? The SJB was caught trying to steal votes from Tamil parties and now struggles to even enter Jaffna. Political parties should avoid such pitfalls,” he remarked.

He also criticized the National People’s Power (NPP) party for losing touch with its historical roots. He argued that the NPP’s lack of acknowledgment of its past, particularly events from the year 1971, has hindered its ability to progress politically. “The NPP, too, has forgotten its past and cannot progress without acknowledging it. Their historical forgetfulness is evident, as they seem to have erased the year 1971 from their memory. We must contend with such a group,” said President Wickremesinghe, pointing out the challenges of dealing with political factions that do not recognize their own history.

In his speech, President Wickremesinghe highlighted the importance of unity among political parties to achieve national goals and emphasized that his administration is focused on improving the lives of the people and advancing the country. He noted significant progress under his leadership, stating, “Our goal is to enhance people’s lives and advance the country. Today, there are no longer queues for gas, fuel, or medicine.” He further mentioned his intent to create a new line at the polling stations, ensuring that democratic participation remains strong and active.

The President expressed gratitude towards the SLFP for its support in rebuilding the nation over the past two years. He reaffirmed his commitment to working collaboratively with all parties to further national development and urged political factions to avoid divisive tactics that harm the democratic process.

President Wickremesinghe’s comments have sparked significant political discourse, especially concerning the ethical practices of political parties and their role in a democratic society. The accusations against the SJB and NPP have led to a wider conversation about the integrity of political processes and the importance of historical awareness in shaping the future of Sri Lanka.
