President Acts Swiftly to Shield Economy from US Tariffs

News Today: President’s bold plan to protect economy from US tariffs

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake addressed the nation at a public rally in Dambulla, assuring citizens that proactive measures have been taken to protect Sri Lanka’s economy from the adverse effects of the recently imposed tariffs by the United States.

The President revealed that a delegation led by Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, has already departed for the United States. Their mission is to engage in negotiations with US officials to seek relief or prevent further economic strain caused by the tariffs.

President Dissanayake emphasized that these discussions are crucial in forming a mutually beneficial agreement with the US. The goal, he said, is not only to shield the Sri Lankan economy from existing tariff damages but also to build future resilience.

“We cannot manipulate the world the way we want,” the President noted. “Decisions that shape the global economy are often made by other states. However, we must prepare and protect ourselves from such unpredictable changes.”

He pointed out the reality that no country is immune to global economic turbulence. Therefore, his administration’s vision is to strengthen the domestic economy, ensuring it remains stable in the face of external shocks.

He concluded his address with a strong statement of intent:

“Creating a sound economy is one of our prime concerns.”

This strategic and forward-thinking approach by President Dissanayake has been praised by experts, particularly for his swift response and diplomatic initiative.
