President To Run As Independent Candidate

News Today: Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe Runs Independently

Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe is set to run for office later this year as an independent candidate, as confirmed by his party’s General Secretary, Palitha Range Bandara. Speaking to reporters after a meeting with the Election Commission yesterday, Range Bandara emphasized the urgency of holding the election as soon as possible.

In response to questions suggesting that the United National Party (UNP) wanted to postpone the election, Range Bandara clarified that he had requested an immediate election to ensure the defeat of the Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP)-led National People’s Power (NPP) as soon as possible. He asserted that neither the SJB nor the JVP-led NPP poses a significant threat to Wickremesinghe’s candidacy.

The UNP General Secretary expressed confidence that Ranil Wickremesinghe would secure a historic number of votes in the upcoming presidential election. He highlighted Wickremesinghe’s extensive political experience and leadership qualities as key factors that would contribute to his anticipated victory.

Range Bandara’s statements come amid heightened political activity in Sri Lanka as various parties and candidates prepare for the presidential race. The decision for Wickremesinghe to run as an independent candidate marks a significant development in the political landscape, suggesting a strategic move to appeal to a broader voter base beyond traditional party lines.

As the election approaches, all eyes will be on how Wickremesinghe’s independent candidacy will impact the overall dynamics of the presidential race. The outcome of this election will be crucial in determining the future direction of Sri Lankan politics, with Wickremesinghe aiming to leverage his independent status to gain widespread support.
