News Today: Breaking Update on Ranil Wickremesinghe Bribery Summons
Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has been officially summoned to appear before the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) today, making major headlines across Sri Lanka and beyond. This event has created a wave of political tension as CIABOC enforces legal measures against high-ranking officials.
According to sources, Wickremesinghe had already failed to appear before the Commission on two previous occasions without providing any reasonable justification. Due to this continued noncompliance, the Commission is now considering serious legal actions.
The latest summons pertains to a controversial statement made by the former President regarding MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake. Dassanayake was previously arrested and produced before the courts over corruption allegations, heightening the political drama.
CIABOC’s Director General, former District Judge R.S.A. Dissanayake, has firmly notified Wickremesinghe that failure to comply with today’s summons will lead to action under Section 126 of the Anti-Corruption Act No. 09 of 2023. This statute empowers CIABOC to initiate legal procedures against individuals obstructing investigations.
